Saturday, October 23, 2010, Kuala Lumpur – With the reunion of Nakiea Miller & Alex Hartman, The Westports KL Dragons finally snapped a 3-games losing streak and earned their 1st victory of the AirAsia Asean Basketball League 2010/2011season.

The addition of Nakiea Miller to the KL Dragons’s roster might just be what the doctor ordered. The KL Dragons are looking to come off with a victory against the Singapore Slingers in their second home game with a chance to avenge a heart breaking lost to the Slingers in their last meeting. The Singapore Slingers; wearing their red jerseys, looked fired up and ready to cause another upset in Dragons’s lair.
The Dragons won the tip off but it was Desmond Oh from the Slingers that opened up the scoring from beyond the arc. Both teams came out firing from all cylinders but it was KL Dragons’s Rudy 3pointer that gave the Dragons the lead at 11-10 with 5:45 remaining in the quarter. It continued to be a close game throughout the quarter until Slinger’s marksman; Leonidez Avenido tied the game at 17-17 from downtown.

Singapore Indoor Stadium, Sunday, October 3, 2010 — The Singapore Slingers started their second ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) season on a brilliant note with a nail-biting 94-93 win over arch-rivals and last year’s runners-up Satria Muda at home.

Kelapa Gading, Jakarta, Wednesday, February 3, 2010 – Satria Muda BritAma (SMB) treated their loyal followers with a spectacular show, dwarfing the Singapore Slingers with a lot of dizzying defensive stops and accurate passing on their way to a 74-45 blowout.

The win evened up the best-of-three semi-final playoffs at 1-1.

The first two Satria Muda possessions can almost sum up the story for the night. With Satria Muda getting the first touch, Nakiea Miller unleashed a 3-point bomb 1m away from the 3-point line to start the rampage. Then on the Slingers’ ensuing possession, Miller blocked Al Vergara’s lay-up to set the tone defensively.

In the first quarter, the Slingers were on a semi-zone defense with the Slingers’ Marcus Ng sticking his face all over Alex Hartman of Satria Muda. In their first scuffle very early in the quarter, Hartman bumped Ng who successfully sold it to the referees for an offensive foul, but after that it was guns blazing for Hartman as he made three consecutive baskets using Ng as the scope. The Indonesian champions were simply in no mood to allow their season to end prematurely and built up as much as a 34-point lead with their American center Nakiea Miller doing the bulk of the damage and finishing with 24 points and 16 rebounds.

Miller had bore the brunt of some Singapore fans during their game one encounter and clearly came out with a point to prove, outplaying Singapore’s Kyle Jeffers who finished with just 5 points although grabbing 11 rebounds.

He also got some able support from the other import Alex Hartman who finished with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists, typical excellent all-round play from the wily import. (more…)

After 45 matches played over the course of more than three months, the inaugural ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) regular season has come to a close.

This region finally has a professional basketball league to call our own, and we’ve seen our fair share of thrills and spills as the six teams battled for league supremacy and a coveted play-off spot. (more…)

In Red Hoops’ second part of the 2009/10 ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) Season Review, team defence is the focus.

The Brunei Barracudas may have averaged the most points per game (78.9), but they have also allowed the most (82.3 points per game). If we take a closer look at point differential (points scored minus points allowed) for each team, we would have a clearer picture of how each team manages their points at both ends of the court.

Barracudas: -3.4
Dragons: -4.0
Patriots: +5.5
Satria Muda: +2.9
Slingers: +3.4
Tigers: -4.4

They would rank as they are on the league standings, except that the Barracudas and Dragons have swapped places. (more…)
