Smart-Gilas national cagers Chris Tiu and Dylan Ababou said the other day they’re ready to sacrifice whatever it takes to bring back the lost glory of Philippine basketball in Asia with a ticket to the London Olympics a bonus if the team gets the job done.

Tiu, 25, and Ababou, 23, are in Serbian coach Rajko Toroman’s 12-man lineup for the Asian Games in Guangzhou on Nov. 12-27. Aside from Tiu and Ababou, named to the squad were J. V. Casio, Marcio Lassiter, Asi Taulava, Kelly Williams, Aldrech Ramos, Greg Slaughter, Jason Ballesteros, Mark Barroca, Japeth Aguilar and Mac Baracael. The roster will be adjusted to make room for Fil-Ams Chris Lutz and Sol Mercado with Marcus Douthit a possible addition if he is able to obtain his Philippine citizenship on time.

“It’s every player’s dream to play for flag and country,” said Tiu, speaking before nearly 300 student writers from 30 schools all over the nation at the UST Varsitarian’s national campus journalism conference. “In the past, the best players from the PBA represented our country. I used to watch PBA stars like James Yap, Willie Miller and Asi play on the national team. It’s a great honor to be chosen to step into their shoes. We’ve got a winning formula with coach Rajko teaching us the European style of play and the SBP giving us the international experience to toughen our game in a three-year development program.” (more…)

After a quiet first half, Nakiea Miller came to life in the second half and carried Satria Muda Britama to a 86-76 victory over the Singapore Slingers at the Singapore Indoor Stadium and a passage through to the ABL finals against the top seeded Philippine Patriots.

With just 2 points to his name in the first half and perhaps troubled by an incident off the ball with the Slingers point guard Al Vergara, the American was a different player after the interval, torching the hosts for 20 points in that crucial second half finishing with yet another double-double in 22 points and 14 rebounds. The Philippine Patriots earned the first finals berth in the ASEAN Basketball League thanks to 6-foot-9 import Jason Dixon and its resilient defense.

The Louie Alas-coached Patriots came back from 16 points down to escape with a 70-65 decision and wrap up their short semifinals series against the Kuala Lumpur Dragons on Wednesday at the MABA Gym in Malaysia.

“We were very complacent in the first half. Luckily, we were able to talk to ourselves at halftime that we must keep our toughness on the defensive end and I guest that was the story of the game,” said Alas, who will have to wait between Singapore and Indonesia for their finals opponent after Satria Muda forced a deciding Game 3 with a 74-45 rout of the Slingers in their own semis series.
